The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Gather 'round, boys and girls!  It's time for another edition of Black And White Illustrations Of Scenes From Some Of My Favorite Books And Stories!

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is one of my favorite Disney cartoons and, coincidentally, it is also one of my favorite short stories.  The team that put the cartoon together managed to create a pitch perfect translation of Washington Irving's classic short/ghost story.  They remained faithful to the tone of the source material, the characters look just as you'd imagine they should, and the choice of using Bing Crosby to narrate the animation works perfectly.

But somehow they forgot to include any reference to a brief passage in the story that I always found to be specifically memorable.  I've illustrated that passage below:

"Ichabod prided himself upon his dancing... he was the admiration of all the negroes; who having gathered of all ages and sizes, from the farm and the neighborhood, stood forming a pyramid of shining black faces at every door and window, gazing with delight at the scene, rolling their white eyeballs, and showing grinning rows of ivory from ear to ear..."

(...notice how I've cleverly included a jack-o-lantern in the background...)

I wonder why they left that part out...

It's a good story.  Read it when you find the time and let me know what you think.

And Happy Halloween.

    1. I don't know why, but I've been drawing a lot of dancing couples lately; I've got at least a dozen drawings (some sketches, some fully inked and colored). I'll have to dedicate a post to all of them, eventually...

One of my blog readers sent the link to me after reading about our situation right now. I saw it for the first time as I was sitting by Jeff's ICU bed, and I love it!
