More Book Doodles

I've got a small collection of books; some fiction, some non-fiction, and some collections of illustrations by visual artists I admire.  And because I'm a chronic drawer, most of my books have a doodle (relevant to the contents of the book) somewhere on the first few pages.  I shared a few examples of my book doodles last year and now I figure it's time to share a few more.

BERNINI   Howard Hibbard
This biography of Bernini, a Baroque 17th century sculptor from Italy, is filled with photographs of his work.  He made marble look like flesh.  Me?  I mostly compile crude lines into vaguely recognizable forms, like this one of Bernini's sculpture Pluto and Persephone.

NEW ULTIMATES:  THOR REBORN
Frank Cho is the cartoonist behind Liberty Meadows, my favorite comic strip that isn't called Calvin and Hobbes.  When he stopped working on Liberty Meadows, he began illustrating comic books.  I don't know enough about Thor and the Avengers to really understand what's going on in this book, but Frank Cho's art is always compelling.  I added my version of Thor to the first page.

AVENGING SPIDERMAN:  MY FRIENDS CAN BEAT UP YOUR FRIENDS
...and speaking of comic books, Joe Madureira was a comic book art prodigy who left the genre to work on video games.  He still comes back every once in a while to do a few issues of Wolverine or SpiderMan.  This book was about Spiderman and the (red) Hulk, so I drew them on the first page.

THE BOOK OF FIVE RINGS   Miyamoto Musashi
I got Musashi Miyamoto's (1584-1645) book on the essence of swordsmanship just in case I ever decide to be a sell-sword.  And because it was on one of the discount tables at a Barnes and Noble.

GREAT WORKS OF JAPANESE GRAPHIC ART   Douglass Mannering
This one, like The Book of Five Rings, is filled with great Japanese prints.  This particular copy also features a doodle, by yours truly, of an arch.

12 CAESARS   Suetonius
...if you can tell me why I've drawn someone throwing a bunch of chickens in this book, you've been paying very close attention to me when I talk about my biggest project, or you've read it and one particular story stuck out as much to you as it did to me...  Anyway, 12 Caesars is a book written by Suetonius (early 2nd century historian) about the first dozen emperors of Rome.

SKETCH TRAVEL   Daisuke Tsutsumi
An artist decided that it would be a good idea to buy a sketchbook and then pass it around the world to all of his friends and heroes in the world of illustration and animation and cartooning.  Everyone took a page (or two) and added a drawing.  The result is this truly impressive compilation of some of the greatest artists in the game.  Strangely enough, he never got the book to me.  But that's okay because I've added my own contribution to this copy.

BIRDS   Gustavo Duarte
Gustavo Duarte, a cartoonist from somewhere in South America(?), puts together wordless stories that are darkly comedic.  His line work reminds me of Al Hirschfeld.  Birds is a story about two birds who show up to the office one day and are stalked by the grim reaper.

THE COMPLETE K CHRONICLES    Keith Knight
Keith Knight is a cartoonist I met back when I was in the comic strip game.  In his K Chronicles, he talks about his day to day life in a big city.  It's where I got the idea for Creeking More In The ATL.  That's why, on the first page, I drew an image of his character in the world of CMATL.

THE BIBLE   God
I keep a Bible with me at work.  Sometimes I read it during my lunch breaks or I use it to look up scriptures people post on billboards or stick on the backsides of their vehicles.  This Bible features a drawing from Ruth.

That's probably enough for today.  I'd like to thank all of you for stopping by.  Enjoy your Monday, and read a book or something if you have a chance.  Maybe look at some art.

Cheers.
