...remember X-Force? One of the first comic books I ever got was an issue of X-Force. I still have it, as a matter of fact (which is odd, because anyone that knows me well knows that I'm the opposite of a pack rat). Here's how it looks:
I had to trade a GI Joe (Storm Shadow, one of the cool ninja ones) for it. This would have been during my early days in elementary school. I spent any money I could find on comics up until around the end of junior high. The ones I liked best all had an "X" somewhere in the title. There was X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, X-Men Classics, X-Factor, Generation X, and, of course, X-Force.
I've heard (and by heard I mean read on wikipedia) that a lot has changed with the X-Force team over the years. Characters have died and then come back to life, folks have gone forward and backward in time, back stories have been re-written, some characters have been changed completely... it's all very odd. When I was onboard, the team was made up of...
CABLE
He was the half-robot leader of the group who had telepathic powers and always carried around guns much larger than himself.
DOMINO
She was second in command. Her power was that she was always lucky, which is one of the lamest powers any superhero has ever had. Mostly she shot people and did kung-fu moves.
FERAL
Feral was part girl and part monkey. Or wolf. I don't remember which. She had teeth and claws and was always angry. Probably because she looked like a monkey wolf.
SUNSPOT
I think Sunspot was black. I mean, he was
literally black, but I think he was also supposed to be
racially black. Sometimes, comic books and cartoons would sneak in black characters without saying anything. That's how we got guys like Panthro from Thundercats and Picolo from DragonBall Z. Sunspot's power was being nuclear.
CANNONBALL
This guy's power was that he was able to change his legs into flames and fly around really fast, that's why he had those goggles on all the time. He was supposed to be country, so all the words in his speech balloons were spelled phonetically.
BOOMER
She was a lot like Jubilee from X-Men, except that her powers weren't as silly. Jubilee made little sparks and fireworks come out of her fingers, but Boomer could make bombs out of air. Which is kind of terrifying.
SHATTERSTAR
He was probably the coolest guy on the X-Force team. Shatterstar was an alien from another planet and he never said much of anything. And he had swords. For me, any character with swords was automatically cool.
WARPATH AND SIREN
Warpath's power was being massive and strong. And he was an Indian, so he wore feathers and had really good tracking skills. I don't remember them ever needing to track anyone, but he was always right there, just in case. Siren was one of those weird characters in comics who can somehow fly even though they don't have any wings. She just kind of stuck her arms straight out and floated forward, I guess. Oh, and she had a sonic scream that she used to break things. Siren and Warpath were a couple.
They'll probably get around to making a movie about these guys at some point. Hopefully they'll do it with a Big Hero 6 kind of style. Live action would be disappointing.
I plan on enjoying my week, and I wholeheartedly encourage you all to do the same.
Cheers.
